Expanding Connectivity to China
In a major boost to its international expansion efforts, Maldivian Airlines has launched direct flights to four key cities in China: Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi’an. The new routes officially commenced in late January 2025, marking a strategic step to revive tourism from one of the Maldives’ most significant source markets.
This move comes as part of the national carrier’s plan to enhance air connectivity and support the government’s goal of attracting 300,000 Chinese tourists to the Maldives in 2025. With improved access and direct flights, the Maldives is now more accessible than ever for Chinese travelers.
Powered by New Wide-Body Aircraft
The route expansion is enabled by the introduction of Maldivian’s first wide-body aircraft, an Airbus A330-200. The aircraft features a seating capacity of 264 passengers, including 18 in business class, and is well-suited for long-haul operations.
The wide-body jet allows Maldivian to provide nonstop service to and from key Chinese hubs, enhancing convenience for travelers and improving the airline’s global profile. The airline has also announced plans to add a second A330 by October 2025, which could open additional direct routes to Europe.
Strengthening Bilateral Tourism
China was once the Maldives' largest inbound market before the pandemic, and this renewed air connectivity is expected to significantly revive arrivals. The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) is also intensifying marketing campaigns in China to support this push.
Positive Industry Response
Industry experts have welcomed the move, citing the importance of diversified source markets. Travel operators and resort groups are already tailoring packages and promotions aimed at Chinese visitors, anticipating strong demand during upcoming travel seasons.
This milestone in Maldivian's expansion plan represents not just a commercial achievement, but also a strategic enabler for the Maldives’ broader tourism objectives in 2025 and beyond.
