Hanimaadhoo International Airport Expansion Nears Completion

Feb 26, 2025

A Game-Changer for Northern Maldives

The $136 million expansion of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is nearly complete, with construction entering its final stages. Scheduled for full completion by March 2025, the project is set to transform the northern atolls into thriving tourism and economic zones.

The development includes a new 2.46 km runway designed to accommodate international narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, eliminating the need for transit through Malé for northern travelers.

Boosting Regional Connectivity

The airport's new terminal will be capable of handling 1.3 million passengers annually and includes upgraded immigration counters, baggage systems, lounges, and duty-free retail. A dedicated seaplane terminal and jetty have also been integrated into the master plan.

This expansion will allow for direct international flights to and from Hanimaadhoo, opening the door for resorts, guesthouses, and eco-tourism operations in Haa Dhaalu and neighboring atolls.

Supporting National Decentralization Goals

Government officials emphasized that this project is aligned with the national goal to decentralize tourism and bring economic development to all regions. Once operational, Hanimaadhoo will become a regional hub, alleviating pressure on Velana International Airport and distributing tourism more evenly across the Maldives.
