Maldives Tourism Sees Strong Start to April 2025

April 16, 2025 – Malé, Maldives – The Maldives is off to a robust start in Q2, with early April figures showing continued momentum in tourist arrivals. As of mid-month, the destination is on track to meet its ambitious targets for the year, bolstered by surging visitor interest and strong source market performance.

Surge in Early April Arrivals

Between April 1–9, the Maldives welcomed 61,531 tourists, a 16.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. By April 12, arrivals had reached 82,180, up 13.9% year-on-year, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism. Cumulatively, total arrivals for 2025 stood at 693,949 by the second week of April — reflecting 5.7% growth over the previous year.

Top Performing Markets

China retained its position as the leading source market for the Maldives in 2025, with 78,285 arrivals recorded so far. Russia followed closely with 75,448, while the United Kingdom ranked third with 73,280 visitors. Italy (61,524) and Germany (50,585) rounded out the top five.

This strong demand reflects the success of targeted campaigns and expanded air connectivity, particularly from key markets in Asia and Europe.

Accommodation Preferences

Of the 714,598 visitors who arrived between January 1 and April 12, nearly 70% chose to stay in resorts — approximately 499,145 guests. Guesthouses attracted 175,963 tourists (24.6%), and hotels accommodated 21,061 visitors (2.9%).

The consistent appeal of resorts, combined with the growing interest in guesthouse experiences, highlights the Maldives’ unique ability to offer both high-end luxury and budget-friendly options.

On Track for 2025 Goals

With over 2 million arrivals recorded in 2024, the government has now set its sights on reaching 2.3 million visitors in 2025. The first-quarter performance and early April results indicate solid progress toward this target, supported by infrastructure development and strategic tourism marketing initiatives.

As the Maldives enters its shoulder season, industry stakeholders remain optimistic about sustaining growth and achieving another record-breaking year.
