Maldives Sets Ambitious Tourism Target for 2025
In his Presidential Address on February 6, 2025, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the government's goal to attract 2.3 million tourists to the Maldives by the end of the year. This target represents a significant increase from the 2 million visitors welcomed in 2024, marking a 9% rise from the previous year.
Expansion into New Atolls
To diversify tourism across the archipelago, the administration plans to develop resorts in previously underexplored regions, including Haa Dhaalu and Thaa Atolls. The government will offer investment incentives and other benefits to attract developers to these areas.
Enhancing Air Connectivity
Improving international accessibility is a key component of the tourism strategy. The national carrier, Maldivian, has introduced wide-body aircraft to its fleet, initiating flights to three destinations in China. Plans are underway to expand services to additional Chinese cities and other international locations. An additional wide-body aircraft is expected to be acquired in October 2025, enabling direct flights from the Maldives to select European destinations.
Supporting Infrastructure Development
Complementing these efforts, significant infrastructure projects are underway to enhance the tourism experience.Hanimaadhoo International Airport is undergoing a $800 million expansion, which includes a new terminal capable of handling 1.3 million passengers annually and seaplane jetties. The expansion aims to improve connectivity, particularly to the northern regions of the Maldives, and is expected to be completed by March 2025.
Looking Ahead
These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to sustainable tourism development, aiming to distribute economic benefits more evenly across the nation. By enhancing infrastructure, expanding air connectivity, and promoting investment in new regions, the Maldives seeks to solidify its position as a premier global tourist destination.
