Terminal Expansion to Meet Growing Demand

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has confirmed that the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is expected to open by July 2025. The announcement follows operational recommendations from the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), ensuring a smoother transition during the busy travel season.

The terminal expansion is a core part of the government’s efforts to accommodate the surge in tourist arrivals, which reached a record-breaking 2 million visitors in 2024 and is projected to hit 2.3 million in 2025.

State-of-the-Art Passenger Experience

Once operational, the terminal will increase VIA’s capacity to handle up to 7 million passengers annually. The facility includes automated check-in, streamlined immigration, expanded retail and F&B outlets, and modern lounges designed to improve the overall traveler experience.

Additionally, enhanced baggage handling and airside operations will reduce congestion, benefiting both travelers and airlines. The project will also bolster VIA’s role as a central hub in the Indian Ocean region.

Final Preparations Underway

Trial operations are expected to begin in early June 2025, with a full commercial launch scheduled for mid-July. MACL is coordinating with airlines and service providers to ensure compliance and readiness.

The upgraded terminal marks a pivotal investment in national infrastructure, reinforcing the Maldives' reputation as a world-class destination with the capacity to support its growing global appeal.
